Top Tips for reducing energy on existing systems

Energy is a hot item these days, with companies redesigning their equipment to be as energy efficient as possible. Here is a quick guide to reducing the total energy consumption on your dehumidification system.

1. Routine Servicing - Keeping your dehumidification systems in tip top shape will ensure the correct efficiency of the system is being used without increased energy consumption.

2. Regular inspection and performance monitoring - Expertly monitoring the dehumidification system means advice on the action needed to maintain the system performance is given, such as when the desiccant rotor (drying wheel) needs replacement, adjustment or replacement of seals to result in considerable energy savings.

3. Waste energy recovery - Internal recovery systems like Munters Energy Purge or our patented PowerPurge are available as retrofit kits which can be build into MX, MA, MDS, MDU and MU systems. These reduce the energy consumption by 15 to 30 % whilst maintaining with the same dehumidification capacity. External recovery systems such as cross flow exchangers or heat pipes can also provide significant savings and are available as upgrades on existing systems. Pay back times of less than one year are quit common for these kind of unit upgrades.

4. Utilisation of waste energy - In many industries warm water is available as result of the production process. Pre heating coils on warm water can be installed to reduce the power of the dehumidifier heater which reactivates the desiccant wheel. Pre heating steam coils on recovery flash steam on low pressure can provide up to 15 % of the reactivation power.

5. Upgrade to more efficient fan motor types and system converters - High efficiency motors are available for most of the fans on Munters dehumidification systems. Traditionally the airflow in systems is adjusted by control dampers, these are creating extra pressure drops and create extra energy consumption. Installing converters on the system fans will avoid this extra power consumption and create more flexible flow adjustment.

6. Better control systems, regular sensor calibration - A sensor that is a few % out of calibration can increase the yearly energy consumption of the dehumidifier by up to 20% . The correct sensor installation and calibration is much more vital than most of us assume. Control systems that do not achieve the optimal control condition result in unstable room conditions. These unstable condition will require around 5 % more energy.

7. Re-evaluation of system lay out, and moisture infiltration control - Simple dehumidification system adaption can result in large energy savings, stopping a system when the doors are open, or installing rapid doors / entry restrictions to a dry rooms are examples. Preventing moisture entry into a room is more efficient than drying it out. The room overpressure and construction largely determines the dehumidifier capacity and related energy consumption.

8. Energy Audits - Mapping your installation in relation to the above items is parts of Munters Energy Auditing service. In addition to a report detailing the dehumidifier performance and measured results, you receive a reselection of the dehumidifier with reduced infiltration and what system upgrades are possible with energy saving options.

The combination of experience in climate control and extensive product knowledge makes Munters the perfect partner to assist you in reducing your energy consumption.
